3 Months!

My baby is 3 months old today! I don't know where the time has gone!

The first two months with FIVE children was really hard for me.

I think a big part of that was the lack of sleep. Sleep makes such a difference in your over-all health.

At 7 weeks, she started sleeping through the night - about 6 blessed hours!

At 7 weeks, she also started smiling. Do you think there's a connection?

Maybe I wasn't smiling at HER until 7 weeks when she started sleeping...

Anyway, all are healthy and well and I finally feel like I'm getting a handle on things.

She's Here!

Number FIVE has arrived!

Baby Claire was born on July 1st, weighing 6 lbs., 13 oz. and with the darkest hair any of my babies has had! (In fact, the boys had NO hair!).

It was 11 1/2 hours of labor, but surprisingly, the easiest labor I've ever had.

I don't know if doing this gets easier as you have more kids, or if my tolerance for pain has increased through the years. Maybe neither, but it really wasn't too painful.

I had an epidural in the final 3 or 4 hours and I'm sure those contractions would have hurt more.

Thank goodness for modern medicine!

Her cord was unusually short so I feel very lucky that I was able to deliver her instead of having a C-section.

They handed her to me immediately and she was a very alarming color of purple! The longer I held her the darker purple she became and she was not crying!

It was very scary.

Finally her nurse took her and sucked some mucus out of her lungs and nose and put her on oxygen and she turned a normal color of pink.

I feel very blessed that everything went so well and she is a healthy baby.

Now after 3 weeks, I'm still adjusting to getting little sleep and taking care of a house and FIVE children.

Kudos to those of you who, after having 5 children, have kept your sanity and have even gone on to have more children!!

The Heartbeat

January 7, 2009

I heard our baby's heartbeat today for the first time.

Even after four pregnancies, the moment that I hear that first heartbeat never ceases to amaze me.

Up to this point, I've been feeling sick and tired - just blah all the time.

But when I hear that heartbeat - it makes it all real.

"Oh yeah,I've been sick because there is a tiny baby living and growing inside of me."

Somehow, it makes everything OK.

Pregnant with Number 5!

We found out in November that I'm pregnant with our 5th.

The fifth pregnancy is SO much different from the first.

The first pregnancy is new and exciting. You document each new phase. You mark off each week.

You have time to focus on taking great care of yourself because you have no other children to care for.

You beam. You glow.

It's great - as far as pregnancy goes.

On the 5th pregnancy, the feeling is more like "(Sigh!) Here we go again."

It's not that this baby is not planned or prepared for. It more like - "Alright, we want another child and this is the only way to get it."

You have 4 other kids to care for.

You can't lay around feeling sorry for yourself.

You can't be bothered with eating right. After all, you're making your 4-year-old mac and cheese for lunch. If you don't finish it, it will go to waste.

You roll your eyes when you overhear a woman on her first pregnancy talking about how great it is.

So I'm a pessimist.

But don't get me wrong. We're excited for this new addition to our family and I'll keep you posted on the progress (through the eyes of a 5th pregnancy woman).
